Immerse yourself in this enchanting and theatrical dance under the guidance of expert instructor Laura Diaz. Enhance your skills, learn intricate moves and uncover the rich cultural significance of this captivating art form. LEVEL: Intermediate | Experience is required. Melaya is a more complicated style. Must have at least 1 year of consistent bellydance training, experience with choreography & performance. Veil experience is helpful. If your are unsure please reach out to us. PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY: JBelly School of RAQ 3rd Annual Showcase will be Feb 9th at Manhattan Movement Arts Center! A professional theater. You have the option to join rehearsals at a later date & perform your Melaya Leff dance for an audience! *performing is not required to take the course. Additional Fees for Performers (due at a later date) $10 per rehearsal: 1 in Dec, 2 in January, Dress Rehearsal TECH Feb 8th Costuming: We will keep this under $60 HISTORY OF MELAYA LAFF: Experience the origins of Melaya Laff, a theatrical dance popularized by Mahmoud Reda in the early 20th century. Explore the playful and coquettish use of the melaya, a large black wrap traditionally worn by Egyptian women. Unlike common misconceptions, Melaya Laff is not a traditional or folkloric dance but a modern performance art, featuring vibrant costumes, lively music, and an emphasis on theatricality and interaction with the audience. Laura Valentina Díaz Vera Meet @Laurabellydancer, a dedicated training professional since 2015. She's learned from various instructors and master teachers, gaining insights and skills from different academies and festivals. She proudly secured 3rd place in the Ladies category at the Cairo By Night Festival 2023 in Greece. But there's more to her than just dancing - Laura is also a talented costume designer. She brings her creative flair into crafting captivating costumes. ------- If for any reason you cannot attend a session a class recording will be given for you to enjoy on your own time.

Cancellation Policy

Any sessions canceled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the scheduled session will be charged the full rate. No-show sessions will not be refunded but a class recording can be requested!
